Jim Swoope and Scott Robertson

This home built in 1953 for Mr. and Mrs. George Mayer’s is another example of 1950’s ranch style. Scott Robertson, and accomplished interior designer; and Jim Swope an art conservator, purchased the home in 1999 and spent a year remodeling the 3bedroom 3-1/2-bath home. The covered entry, which was formerly an open carport, welcomes you into an enclosed front garden that centers on the lap pool. During the renovation the pool, the cabana, and the privacy wall were added to the original home.

The footprint of the original home remains the same although several changes were made including the relocation of the kitchen sink to the former front door. Combining several rooms including the old kitchen the foyer and a utility closet created the new kitchen. The east patio was added and the old picture windows on the front and rear of the living room were replaced with doors and full-length windows to bring the views inside. The floor plan was originally more open with more doors between rooms but Scott and Jim found they needed more wall space for their art collection.

One of the most striking features of the home is Scott’s fearless use of color throughout the rooms and outside of the home. The garden (when its not suffering the effects of a January cold snap) is a tropical paradise. Over 20 varieties of palms are located around the yard, along with many rare antheriums and philodendrons.
